Open source is a great balance to closed source products, but if every product available were open source, and there was no longer any closed source code out there, is it logical that we would see the same level of investment? Like its predecessor, Code Quality is a bit dry—I've read half a chapter at a time for two weeks—and very Unix-centric. The pragmatist values having good tools and toys more than he dislikes commercialism, and may use high-quality commercial software without ideological discomfort. Developing a proprietary in-house CMS – whatever its quality – means that its developers can effectively hold the company to ransom, because they are the only ones in the world who understand it. Open-source, however, seemed safer in his view because thousands of eyes are patrolling not just for bad code but security holes. Open-source may be hip, but an awful lot of cultural baggage can get in the way of newsrooms adopting it. Diomidis Spinellis: Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective. This is a model based on trust where everybody wins: The developers are payed for their work and the high quality opensource result would still be free for the community. Of these new models, few have seen more attention than massive open online courses (a.k.a. €MOOCs”), which, starting with Khan Academy, promise to offer access to quality, affordable education at scale — online. Is all that money really going to come ..
